Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun
|
The agents stayed at the Secrets Capri property during their visit to the area.
Photos Available
Agent Notes:
General - Trees have lost leaves but have new buds, noticeable improvement daily. Told that could take up to five months for foliage to return to normal. Some ceiling leaks in the hallways as well as the guest rooms. Drywall and Painting is on going throughout the entire day. Tennis courts were damaged and under repair. Work in progress on lobby, glass windows and doors, drywall etc. Huge improvements are noticed from day to day. The majority of the damage seems to be the landscape, beach & palapas. Main ballroom windows boarded up, awaiting delivery of large glass. Carpets to be cleaned of “musty” odor. Crew repairing palapas at 6 a.m. every morning, mostly completed upon our departure. Amazed by the repair work completed during our five day stay. Drywall and Painting in lobby was completed prior to departure. Occupancy is steadily increasing.
Beach - Has expanded.
Rooms - No damage to report.
Restaurants - Operational.
Entertainment - A list of activities was made available, however activities were not taking place. May have been due to the low occupancy.
Staff - Wonderful, top notch.

Apple Vacations Regional Sales Manager
General Information – Please know that the Mexican people are working very hard every day to bring the area back even better than before. They are very appreciative of our support and look forward to welcoming you.
The airport looks good. They are still repairing some ceiling damage from water, but overall it is OK. All the Duty Free shops are open and stocked with merchandise.
Cancun - The road to Cancun is open and there is a lot of construction going on at all the resorts. Most of the shops and restaurants are still closed, but repairs are being made. Vegetation took a harder hit but plants are being replaced and work is going on around the clock.
Riviera Maya - The road to the Riviera Maya is in good shape. The only noticeable signs of the hurricane are the damaged billboards and the vegetation. The trees were stripped of leaves but they are coming back with each passing day. I noticed a difference just from Friday to Monday. Everything is beginning to look green again.
Overall the resorts I visited look great. The smaller plants around each property are fine. Many plants are blooming and look completely untouched. The larger trees and palm trees have been damaged, but everything has been cleaned up and looks good. The beaches in Riviera Maya look great. Many hotels gained beach and others remain just as they were before the storm.
I also visited 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen and 99% of the stores and restaurants are open. The stores are well stocked with merchandise and almost everyone was having a hurricane sale, 50% off...a great time to shop. The beach in Playa del Carmen is a bit smaller, but the beach front restaurants are open and the beach was filled with people.
Resort Notes:
Iberostar Paraiso Maya - looks great, beach is fine Iberostar Paraiso Lindo - one restaurant is being repaired near the beach, property and beach are fine Iberostar Paraiso del Mar - freshly painted on the outside, property and beach fine Secrets Capris - looks great, gained more beach Bahia Principe Tulum - at 100%, gained beach Bahia Principe Akumal - at 100%, gained beach Bahia Principe Coba - new hotel complete and ready to open Sunscape Tulum (Dreams as of 12/15) - gained beach. New pool and some oceanview rooms will be ready 12/15. Grand Palladium Colonial and Kantenah - looks great Grand Palladium White Sand - new hotel, rooms are complete. Construction still going on with pool and restaurants but still scheduled to open on time Barcelo Maya Tropical and Colonial Beach - new hotel, looks great, beach is great Barcelo Maya Beach - everything was fine, freshly painted outside, beach is great Adventura Spa Palace - repairing one restaurant, everything else is great. All spa facilities are fully functional. Iberostar Tucan - hotel and beach are great. The jungle area is sparse but the animals are still there Riu Yucatan - fully operational, still a great beach Riu Playacar - fully operational, still a great beach Riu Palace Mexico - fully operational, still a great beach

I saw a ton of hotels. Basically, Cancun is a war zone and I would not send anyone there until the end of next summer except for the two RIU properties. However, I would recommend that the client stay on property. It really isn't safe to walk around Cancun at this point. The busses are running, but I wouldn't get off anywhere. A few of the condos are just fine, but this is not a destination to visit for quite some time. The apple ground rep (who was wonderful) said she would not suggest sending people until late summer. What a bummer.
The Riviera Maya is fabulous. Every hotel we saw was just perfect. Occupancy was at about 40%. The vegitation was greener on Monday than on Friday. It's really fine to stay at any of the hotels I visited.
Resorts Visited:
Iberostar Tucan - Of all the 19 hotels I saw in the Riviera Maya, this one had the most damage. This is probably due to the fact that the enormous jungle that sits between the hotel lobby and the beach now looks like a forest after a fire. The trees are still there, but the foliage is nearly all gone. The hotel itself was great and in perfect working order. Iberostar Maya, Lindo, Beach, Quetzal - As the other hotels in the RM, I would say everything is back to normal, with the exception of the foliage. Things on Monday were much greener than the previous Friday. The biggest disappointment to this complex was the work they were doing on the beach. The work was great, but I don't think that if I were a client the last week of November, I would have been too thrilled with three bulldozers working on the sandy beaches. There were guests at the beach, but not many. The noise level was just too much. By Christmas (and maybe even now) the beach area will be leveled and more manageable. The hotel itself was wonderful. Secrets Capri - It seems to be untouched by the hurricane. Sunscape Tulum - A man realized we were touring the hotel and he pulled us over. He told us the food was no good, the service poor, and the rooms musty- and then gave us all a big wink. He begged us not to go back and tell anyone about the hotel. He and his friends have been coming for ten years and they don't want people to know about it. Grand Palladium Complex – No additional notes. Barcelo Maya Complex - No additional notes. Bahia Tulum,Akumal,Coba - I stayed at the Tulum and really liked it. The grounds are impeccable, the resort is clean and fresh and a very good choice. Aventura Spa – 40% occupancy, but looked great. Riu Yucatan,Playacar,Palace - The grounds were very nice and the beach was just as beautiful as last year. I really don't see any major damage except for things not being as green. I did NOT go into the Tequila, so I really don't know how it looked.
